Benefit Concerts
My freshman year of High School I read an article about an unhoused student at one of the High Schools in my district. He was a football player who couldn’t afford books for school, new clothing, or anything he needed to play football. The article was written to bring attention to a fund that was created for students like him. I decided that I wanted to help. I got to work putting together a benefit concert to raise money for this fund. Everyone should have an opportunity to fully participate in high school!
I was adamant that this event was GOING to happen. I was active in my church and had connections to a variety of other churches in the area. Our church administration approved my use of the space at no cost. We had music equipment and a sound booth in the space that my dad and I both knew how to operate. My youth group leader knew someone whose company printed tickets and helped me get physical tickets and an admission stamp sponsored by this company.
I had a few friends in bands, and they donated their time in exchange for the ability to sell merchandise at the show. I got hot dogs and chips donated by Sam’s Club, had adult church volunteers help cook the food, and we sold it at the event. My dad is a photographer and he volunteered his time and equipment to take photos at the event (like the one above - thank you dad). I had fliers printed at no cost, and I began spreading the word.
I told all of my friends at school, I hung fliers everywhere I could, and I had all of my friends at school and various churches help me to spread the word. I invited the fund to bring attendees at no charge. My first year planning the event we raised $1,500 for the fund. I had so much fun planning this event, so I chose to plan it my Sophomore year too. My second year planning this event, I raised $2500.
Having the opportunity to creatively plan an event that would benefit others is one of the biggest reasons I have such a passion for Event Planning. I got to combine my passions for music, community, and supporting others.
