City Events
My main source of income in college was my part time job at the Flagstaff Aquaplex. It is a City facility with a fitness center, an indoor track, a multi-purpose gym, an indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, two water slides, showers, a babysitting facility, and a rock wall. We hosted basketball games, open gym, open pickle ball, and a variety of fitness classes. I got to work on the “dry side”, meaning I helped run the gym, the fitness center, and my favorite, the rock wall. I was belay certified and I had regulars that came in to climb frequently. None of this pertains to events, but I promise I’m getting there.
Being a City employee, I was part of the pool of employees utilized to help run City Events, and the City Events Manager worked in our facility. She was an alumna of my sorority, and knew I had an interest in Event Planning, so she always made sure I was scheduled to work city events.
Some of the events I helped with were holiday parties in our facility and in our downtown square, concerts in the park, the Children’s Music and Arts festival, and many others. I enjoyed helping with set up, tear down, face painting, children’s activities, and was even hired by the city as a photography contractor.
I made a lot of worthwhile connections, I got to interact with the general public, and I provided a necessary service to my community. I felt so fulfilled being able to participate in City events so frequently, especially in a city like Flagstaff.
